Nest Updates
Notes from our volunteer watchers. Entries below are sample placeholders until the season's first confirmed observations are posted.
Sample · Early season
SampleFresh sticks arriving daily
Both adults have been seen carrying new branches and soft grasses to the nest, a classic sign of preparation for the season ahead.
Sample · Mid-season
SampleIncubation shifts observed
The pair appears to be trading turns on the nest. Bald eagles typically share incubation for about 35 days.
Sample · Late season
SampleWatching for the first pip
When hatching nears, look for an adult standing to peer down into the bowl. We'll post confirmed updates here.
Meet the eagles
A comeback story worth watching
Once nearly gone from the lower 48 states, bald eagles recovered thanks to habitat protection and the ban on DDT. Florida is home to one of the largest nesting populations in the continental U.S., and in the Southeast, nesting usually runs through the cooler months instead of spring and summer.
We haven't named any eagles. We'll only share details about specific birds after they've been seen on camera. Tip: the larger bird of a pair is usually the female.
- Wingspan
- 6–7.5 ft
- Females are typically about 25% larger than males.
- Nest size
- Up to 10 ft wide
- Pairs often reuse and add to the same nest for years.
- Incubation
- ~35 days
- Usually 1–3 eggs, laid a few days apart.
- First flight
- 10–12 weeks
- Young eagles don't get their white heads until about age 5.

About the project
Watching without disturbing
The River City Bald Eagle Nest Cam is a Jacksonville project that shares a wild eagle nest near the St. Johns River with neighbors, classrooms, and nature lovers everywhere.
Our goal is simply to watch and learn. We don't bait the birds or interfere with them, and we follow the federal and state rules that protect nesting bald eagles.
We don't share the nest's exact location, to protect the eagles from disturbance. Please don't try to find it.
Support the cam
Help keep the nest on screen, every season
Power, internet, and equipment upkeep keep the camera online as reliably as we can manage it. Donation and volunteer options are coming soon — in the meantime, the best support is inviting someone who’d love it to become a member.
